Mesut Özil signed for Arsenal in September 2013, eight months after the Gunners’ most recent Premier League goal against Chelsea.
Unbelievable, isn’t it? One goal in the Community Shield back in August is all we have managed since then, also drawing a blank in a League Cup game back in 2013.
That’s eight games and just one goal scored against the Blues, and it’s frankly ridiculous. Theo Walcott’s goal back in January 2013 was nicely taken but ultimately a consolation. What’s worse it that, in that time, we’ve not even looked like scoring against them.
In Özil’s first season at the club we were toothless in the League Cup before drawing 0-0 in a cagey Premier League match. Later on in the campaign we lost 6-0 at Stamford Bridge, playing over 70 minutes with 10 men.
Last season we managed to play the whole game with 11 but conceded a penalty fairly early and lost 2-0 away before another 0-0 draw in north London. This year has been even worse, despite Chelsea not even managing to get out of the bottom half for most of the campaign we have lost against them twice and played a total of around 60 minutes (out of 180!) with 11 men on the pitch.
Nine and a half hours without a Premier League goal against Chelsea. Three seasons. When will it end?
