Jack Wilshere believes that Arsenal winning the FA Cup in 2014 was a huge boost for the club and the kick-start we needed to challenge for the title again.
After nine long years without a trophy and failing to capitalise on our previous chance in the Carling Cup, we finally brought the drought to an end in 2014 when we beat Hull to lift the FA Cup. From my point of view, that day was one of the most special I’ve experienced as an Arsenal fan.
Wilshere, who is currently out through injury, reckons this FA Cup win was the catalyst we needed to return our confidence to where it should be.
“I think it was important that we won our first trophy after so long,” the midfielder said.
“We had our chance a few years back in the League Cup and we blew it.
“That was really the story of that season and we struggled for a few seasons and finally found our feet again and looked like we had a chance of winning the league.”
He added, “At the end of the day when you look back at your career you are judged on the trophies you have as player and as a manager so it was important to get our first one.”
Obviously we went on to win the FA Cup the following year and now it appears we could genuinely be challenging for the title. We’re a club on the up and it’s hard not to look back at that FA Cup win and think that’s precisely where is all started.
