Following a 3-0 win against Manchester United and the international break, Arsenal are now entering a crucial week.

Firstly, a trip to Watford on Saturday gives a great opportunity to win back-to-back Premier League games and create some momentum. Then, on Tuesday, Bayern Munich come to the Emirates Stadium with the Gunners fighting to stay in the Champions League.

Two positive results would be an incredible boost, but Arsène Wenger is refusing to rest players at Watford so they’re available against Bayern.

“For me the most important game is Watford because the Premier League is the most important competition, with the Champions League,” the Arsenal manager told the media in Thursday’s press conference. “I would say the Premier League is the most important competition for us.”

Having lost our first two Champions League group games (with the toughest two fixtures yet to come) it’s no surprise that the Premier League is more important to us now.

Laurent Koscielny is a doubt for both games but you can be sure he will play against Watford if he’s available and deemed the best option, even though Bayern are just around the corner. Wenger seems to see an opportunity to win the league now, and he won’t let go of it.

The Champions League, meanwhile, will always be a mixed bag. Even if we were to recover from our awful start, knockout competitions are never particularly predictable. The draw can be difficult, and there’s no chance to respond to something as silly as a bad refereeing decision going against you at home.

If Arsenal are to prioritise, putting the Premier League first is absolutely the right thing to do.
