Is anyone else starting to feel a little bit sorry for Robin van Persie?

There’s a question I never thought I’d find myself asking.

The striker left Arsenal for Manchester United in 2012 while he was in the form of his life in what was a transfer shrouded in controversy. Gooners felt betrayed and let down. He went on to win the Premier League with the Red Devils and my bitterness towards him increased tenfold.

However, as predicted, after his first good season the Dutchman’s old injury woes resurfaced and he was eventually sold to Turkish team Fenerbahce after barely appearing for United.

Recently, RvP was filmed looking less than enthusiastic while warming up the his new team and now things have gone from bad to worse as he scored an own goal for his national team. The Netherlands have now failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

Maybe I’m soft-hearted but I can’t help but feel for the bloke. If he’d just stayed put at Arsenal maybe he wouldn’t be facing this complete slump in his career. Of course, on the other hand, if he’d stayed maybe we might not be in such a strong position.

Watch his impressive own goal, as well him sitting on the bench looking totally enthralled for Fenerbahce, below.
