Former United man Giles has blasted Mesut Ozil for being his ‘disgraceful display’ against Olympiacos in the Champions League.

And so continues other people’s unnecessary criticism of one of our best players purely because of his £42.5m price tag.

Giles spoke ahead of Arsenal’s clash with his former team on Sunday and seemed ridiculously irate over our playmaker’s ‘dishonest’ performance against Olympiacos in the Champions League mid-week.

“It was an absolutely disgraceful display,” Giles said.

“He was totally dishonest in the way he played. Instead of making a genuine effort to win the ball back, he was giving silly free-kicks away. That’s always the sign of a player who doesn’t want to make a real effort.

“He hasn’t done anything for Arsenal at all. Arsenal won’t do anything if he’s in the team.”

What?

Not only is the rant a little bizarre the say the least, but it’s completely unnecessary. Ozil did not play well against the Greek team but treating him as if he was the only Arsenal player performing poorly is silly.

There were 11 players on the pitch for that match. Ozil was just one. Another one was Ospina who bounced the ball into our own net. Another was Gibbs who offered nothing going forward. Another was the Ox who had a shot early on and then disappeared for the rest of the game.

Blaming Ozil for his performance alone smacks of jealousy from the former United man and it’s completely uncalled for.

To even go as far as say the German has done nothing for us and we won’t go anywhere with him in the team is just strange.
