It still appears that Ian Wright is smarting over Arsenal not signing Karim Benzema from Real Madrid during the transfer window.

In fact, he seems downright angry about it and has labelled our apparent pursuit of the forward as ’embarrassing’.

“I thought the Benzema situation was embarrassing in the way they pursued it,” said the former Arsenal striker. “Trying to get a player like that, straight off the bat you have to find out if they’re interested in coming. If they’re interested, you pursue it. I thought they dealt with it was pretty bad, and the way he mugged Arsenal off on Twitter by saying Madrid is his home wasn’t great.”

Arsenal were heavily linked with the goal scorer during the summer but after a lot of talk, the transfer never happened and Benzema took to social media to call anyone who thought he’d leave the La Liga club ‘clowns’.

Very little is actually known about whether we were genuinely interested in signing the 27-year-old, whether it was all just media speculation, or whether we were sort of interested, but not committed to spending the money Madrid were asking for.

Either way, it’s a moot point because we didn’t sign him and I doubt we’ll be continuing our interest into the winter transfer window now we’ve been thoroughly ‘mugged off’.
