Reports that Arsenal almost sold Mathieu Flamini this summer should come as a surprise to no one.

The midfielder was hardly getting any game time last season and only made 23 appearances in the Premier League. In fact, Wenger was so insistent on him not playing that he recalled Francis Coquelin from his loan spell at Charlton when Mikel Arteta got injured.

Therefore, reports that are supposedly only emerging now that we wanted him to leave, aren’t exactly big news.

Although there aren’t many Gooners who actively dislike the Frenchman, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who thought he was worth having at the club, even on the bench. When reports emerged this summer that we were trying to flog him off to the highest bidder, no one was shocked or upset.

However, now, the majority of us have changed our tune after Flamini, or at least someone who looked a lot like Flamini, played against Spurs in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night and scored a brace. The win put us through to the next round and Arsenal fans everywhere have been left in a state of confusion.
