Calum Chambers has come under fire from former Arsenal man, John Hartson, who claims the defender looks out of his depth at the club.

Arsenal signed the 20-year-old from Southampton last season and he’s since gone on to only feature 37 times. Admittedly, his absence on the pitch has been partly to do with injury, but the youngster just hasn’t taken off the way we expected him to after watching his initial few performances.

As a result, the right-back is severely lacking in confidence, which wasn’t helped by a shaky performance at centre-back against Liverpool after Laurent Koscielny picked up a minor back injury and Per Mertesacker was taken ill.

Rather than just a blip, former Arsenal man John Hartson believes Chambers just isn’t made of the right stuff to be a proper Gunner.

“They added Calum Chambers for £16 million from Southampton. Calum Chambers at the minute looks out of his depth,” he said.

“They’ve switched him from right-back he’s tried him at centre-back, he looks as if the young boy is just a little bit not quite on it right now.”

Hartson continued, “He just doesn’t really look like an Arsenal player at the minute. He needs to improve.

“He needs work on his heading, his ball work in training.”

On the face of it, Hartson’s comments may appear harsh but, in all honesty, he has a point. Chambers does look a little lost on the pitch when he’s called into action at the moment but I’m sure this is just an issue of confidence rather than ability, and he’ll come good soon enough.

Chambers appears to be the type of player who needs solid, consistent game time in order to flourish, rather than those lucky few who can just walk onto the pitch after weeks of not playing and put on a world class performance.
