According to the London Evening Standard, Arsenal tried to sign Simone Zaza on deadline day from Juventus.

The 24-year-old only signed for the Old Lady at the start of July after they exercised their option to buy him from Sassuolo, the club who had co-owned him after Juve bought him from Sampdoria in 2013 before selling all of him to Sassuolo only to buy him back the following year for €18m.

The report in LES gives very few details but what is clear is that Arsenal were rebuffed in their attempts to sign him. LES cite their source as ‘reports from Italy’ (likely Gianluca Di Marzio) but there are no more details than this included in their report.

GDM, however, states that Juve issued a ‘resounding no’ because they would be left with no time to find a replacement for the frontman. Confusingly, GDM also states that Juve asked Arsenal for €30m (£22m) for him in the knowledge that the Gunners would not pay that amount, so perhaps the ‘no’ was not as resounding as it is being made out.

Zaza is a left-footed forward with five caps for Italy and although he is described as having a ‘good eye for goal’ he found the net only 10 times last season in 34 appearances, and has only scored more than 11 goals in one season on one occasion (18).

Anyway, it’s all pretty much pointless to discuss him at this point given the window is shut.

Zaza.
