Young Argentinian striker Jonathan Calieri is keen to move away from Boca Juniors to start playing in Europe, according to reports.

The Argentine giants signed Carlos Tevez and Dani Osvaldo over the summer, meaning Calieri’s place is under huge threat despite the striker scoring 13 goals in 36 games since joining the club in 2014.

Calieri is just 21 years of age and undoubtedly has room to improve but this rumour is a weird one. Arsenal have been linked before but, reportedly available for just £5m, why wouldn’t the Gunners have simply moved for him during the summer if they are interested?

Arsène Wenger has Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud, who are likely to be rotated throughout the season. With Danny Welbeck set to return around Christmas and Wenger listing Alexis Sánchez as another option in that position.

Away from the club are Yaya Sanogo and Chuba Akpom, both of whom Wenger seems to rate highly, are on loan to gain first-team experience at Ajax and Hull City before vying for a place in the Arsenal manager’s plans next summer.

Can anyone, really, see Arsenal signing a striker who isn’t top quality? I can’t, especially when Welbeck returns, but I guess Calieri’s agent is just doing his job.
