Following a frustrating 2-0 loss at the hands of West Ham at home, Arsene Wenger made it clear that he wouldn’t let the media pressure him into making rash new signings.

The boss was bound to be disheartened by our lackluster performance, which we’ve seen happen too many times now. We couldn’t find a single goal, despite having the majority of the shots both on and off target, but, despite this, Wenger claims he won’t be bullied into making a new signing just for the sake of it.

“I can only repeat what I’ve said: if an exceptional solution turns up, we will do it,” Wenger insisted. “We bought and still lost the game today. We listen to people but we have to focus on the quality of our performance.”

He continued, “Today we have been hurt mentally and it is a good opportunity to respond. I would like to think that we are responsible to buy the players and the coaches, not the media.”

Arsenal continue to be linked with Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, despite Wenger not actually seeming interested. However, perhaps after this match, the transfer could be on the cards.

“When you’re a pro footballer, you have to face your responsibilities and not always look at something else,” Wenger added. “Today we have to look at ourselves and think we were not good enough and not to think that these kinds of things are solutions for us.”

Wenger’s right. It wasn’t good enough and was slightly worrying. Pre-season was supposed to prepare us for the intensity of the league, not make us believe we’d already won it.

All that we can do is move on and hope we put in a better performance next weekend against Crystal Palace, which is already making me nervous.
