The transfer deadline is approaching, and it’s all getting a little bit ridiculous.

Every little thing is read into as a hint, from player quotes to stuff as silly as Twitter or Instagram activity. How does deadline day social media algebra work? Well:

‘Neymar followed Mario Götze + Götze followed Jack Wilshere =Arsenal are signing Neymar and Götze!’

Obviously this is ridiculous, but it happens. So maybe Monday wasn’t the best time for Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal to start following Athletic Club on Twitter. The player is Basque, so is in a very limited pool of players who can actually be signed by Athletic Club.

As a result they have been linked with a move for the left-back all summer, and the rumours have resurfaced again on Monday afternoon.

Translation: “CONFIRMED: Athletic Bilbao continue looking at Nacho Monreal. The Spanish seeks a way out of Arsenal. Attentive.”

Yeah, erm, no? Arsenal aren’t selling Monreal, who is clearly first choice ahead of Kieran Gibbs. The Spanish defender has started all four Premier League games so far and is undeniably Arsenal’s strongest option at left-back at present. The defender is supposedly frustrated he has not been given a new contract, but Arsenal have an option to extend his current deal by a further year, meaning it would expire in 2017. Moreover the Gunners haven’t forayed into the market to sign a replacement. This is one deal that is definitely not happening.
