Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Götze has been linked with a move away from the club all summer, but is set to stay with the German champions.

Quite honestly the Germany international doesn’t help himself, often opening his mouth only to score the proverbial PR own goal. Recently he, rather innocently and inadvertently, suggested manager Pep Guardiola should speak to him more just days after Guardiola said they speak a lot.

Now the Express have started another story saying he is interested in a move to Arsenal, which hasn’t been implied anywhere and completely goes against the line being trotted out of Bayern Munich.

“And the Sunday Express claims Arsenal are still on alert for Gotze, as his relationship with manager Pep Guardiola has deteriorated,” their website read on Monday.

That only led to every other ‘news’ (or total and utter ridiculous rumour aggregator) outlet on the internet talking about ‘reports’ which suggested Götze could be interested in a move.

All speculation should, by now, be over with after Bayern chief-executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge last week said Götze has told the club he wants to stay. I’ve translated (some of) the quotes but you can see them for yourself if you speak German and don’t want to take my word for it.

“He [Götze] has communicated to the club that he will remain here,” Rummenigge defiantly said.

“At the end of the day the decision must come from Mario, I’ve already said that. Of course he has a lot of competition for his position.

“He has two years [remaining] on his contract.”
