Former Gunner and pundit Charlie Nicholas believes Arsenal need to buy another defensive midfielder in order to challenge for the title.
In other news: water is wet.
Speaking after our 1-0 win away against Newcastle, Nicholas revealed that he also reckons we need a striker, although he doesn’t believe we’re signing one.
“If you can get someone like Karim Benzema, I’d obviously go for him because he is better than what’s already there, but I don’t see them going for a striker and I would rather he (Wenger) went for a stronger presence in midfield,” he said.
“He should have moved for (Morgan) Schneiderlin. He should have gone for someone with the presence of mind that can handle things physically as well as technically in that area of the field.”
The former Arsenal man continued, “There are a few players in the market across Europe that he could get but I just hope that he does it.
“(Francis) Coquelin is fine but you need another player of stature in that position. I’m hopeful, but I’m not convinced.”
All joking aside, the pundit isn’t the only one to make this observation and I hardly believe Wenger is sitting at home twiddling his thumbs, despite what many Arsenal fans think.
If we find someone, I have complete faith we will add, just as Wenger has repeated many, many times.
Unfortunately, just conjuring up the next Patrick Vieira out of grass and dreams isn’t exactly possible at this point in time. So, for the time being, we’ll just have to sit tight, be patient and have faith in the manager who convinced Mesut Ozil to come to north London two seasons ago.
