Last season saw Santi Cazorla step up and take more responsibility in the Arsenal team, and it’s a change he’s very happy with.

The Spaniard has recently signed a new deal with the Gunners and next on his agenda is making sure he, and the team, deliver more performances like the one that saw them win the Community Shield on Sunday.

“We have to try to show that level to fight against Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool,” Cazorla told Cope.es after the win at Wembley.

“People are very excited to win this weekend at Chelsea, but the league is the most important and we have experience of losing matches you can’t lose if you want to win the league. We must learn from it.”

it appears that Arsenal are learning. After years of misery the FA Cup Final went smoothly in May, and followed convincing wins when visiting both Manchester clubs earlier in 2015. Liverpool were also convincingly dispatched in April and the club has now beaten Chelsea.

Now we have to deliver the very same performances more consistently to make winning a habit and finally win the title once more.

“The aim is to fight for the Premier League,” Cazorla said. “But looking from Sunday to Sunday, not long-term.”

The danger after a result as big as the one on Sunday is getting carried away but it is encouraging to see that the squad aren’t doing that. Immediately after the game Per Mertesacker also said we can’t read too much into the result, even though it gives a clear boost ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking about his new contract, Cazorla stated how happy he is at the club.

“Things have gone very well and hopefully I can help the team to win titles, that’s why I came to Arsenal.

“The new role that I have, with the arrival of Alexis the coach used me more in the middle area of the field. I took more prominence, and I feel a major responsibility in the team.

Last season, with that change, Cazorla became a player that Arsenal could turn to and rely upon every week.

“I have noticed this change and I’m very happy in this position.”

It is great to have more players than we have had in a long time willing to take responsibility, and it only bodes well for the new season.
