The transfer window is yet to heat up in north London, with Arsène Wenger focusing on the squad he already has rather than trying to build a new team.

Part of that squad is Spanish defender Nacho Monreal, who is repeatedly being linked with Athletic Club of La Liga.

Rumours seemed slightly odd considering Monreal’s emergence as Wenger’s first-choice left-back last season, and the player has now reiterated that he is happy in London. Speaking to Goal, the left-back insisted that he doesn’t want to leave Arsenal.

“I’m very happy at Arsenal,” said Monreal at the launch of the new Arsenal away kit.

“When you play for Arsenal, you know they are one of the biggest clubs in England but, here in Singapore, you see they are also one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

So why would he want to leave? He usurped Kieran Gibbs last season and provided crucial moments in wins away from home against both Manchester clubs. Now seen as a much improved player, Monreal is at a club that he really appears to care for.

“The reception we get from the fans everywhere we go is amazing to see for the players and we are very happy to be here with them.”

Monreal seems more than content at Arsenal. His current contract runs for one more year and the club have an option to extend it further. He would only leave the club if they successfully pursued another option in his position so right now he has nothing to worry about.

If he continues where he left off last season he will deserve the new contract that he wants, and the smart money says that Arsenal would give it to him.

As of right now Monreal himself isn’t interested in speculation, so us fans shouldn’t be either.
