After a strong loan spell at Olympiakos was followed by an impressive World Cup campaign for Costa Rica Joel Campbell was given one more shot to see if he could make the grade at Arsenal.

He couldn’t.

The Costa Rican was limited to just over 300 minutes under Arsene Wenger before he was eventually loaned out to La Liga side Villarreal in January.

There Campbell had more success, playing 16 times and scoring once In La Liga, and he could be heading back.

Real Sociedad, now managed by David Moyes, are rumoured to be interested in signing Campbell in a permanent deal bu they aren’t alone as Turkish outfit Fenerbahce and Portuguese champions SL Benfica are also said to be sniffing around the 22 year-old.

Campbell was wanted by Real Sociedad back in January but joined Villarreal as Arsenal completed a deal for their centre-half Gabriel.

Last summer Benfica were already said to be interested but Arsenal were unwilling to sell, especially after Campbell impressed during a pre-season match against the Portuguese giants.

Now, though, he is available and he would cost around £5M.

Arsenal made sure that Campbell signed a new deal back in January but after a spell at Villarreal that wasn’t totally convincing it is now certain that The Gunners will sell him but are in no position to command a big fee.
