It seems Dutch manager Rene Meulensteen has decided to involve himself in the ‘Arsenal need a new striker‘ campaign.

The coach, who used to be Manchester United’s assistant manager, has offered up his opinion on whether Olivier Giroud is good enough to be Arsenal’s main striker. Apparently not.

“I still think they are looking for a real top, top striker,” he said. “One that they know they can count on every week, week in week out, as soon as they get a chance in the box – bang, they put it away.”

Meulensteen mirrors Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s view that Arsenal need to buy a big name striker in the next transfer window to really challenge for the title next season.

However, both Arsene Wenger and ex-Arsenal player Charlie Nicholas believe Giroud is all the fire power we need.

Another point the Dutchman made was that we find it difficult to grind out wins.

“They need to learn to scrape one nil wins. We all know how great the football they can play is, but sometimes that leaves them short with results at the end.”

These comments seem a little out-dated to me, because this season we’ve definitely shown we can win ugly and grind out those victories. It makes me wonder if he’s actually watched us play, particularly in the second half of the season.

(Daily Cannon Fact Fairy says ‘Arsenal have four 1-0 wins this season and a total of 13 wins by a one-goal margin. They have drawn eight games in all competitions, results which would have been altered by finding Rene’s spare goal. Chelsea have eight in the Premier League alone.’)
