As full-time approached on Saturday, “49, 49 undefeated” could be heard ringing around Turf Moor with the Arsenal away fans in fine voice.

They always are.

The 1-0 win over Burnley marked an eight consecutive Premier League win. The ‘Invincibles’ were the last Arsenal team to enjoy such a run, and manager Arsène Wenger and his players will now be targeting another unbeaten run to end the season.

Another famous chant, ‘One-nil to the Arsenal’ would have been fitting at the weekend. George Graham’s side was renowned for its ability to scrap, and Wenger’s newest Arsenal team is capable of the very same. And the manager knows it:

“You have to be capable of winning 1-0 as well. We know we can play with sharpness and fluency but today was a bit more scrappy, more fighting, more combative and we can produce that side as well.”

This side of Arsenal has been shown a number of times over the last couple of years, but beforehand was the major criticism of Wenger’s Arsenal.

The manager was, however, quick to remind everyone of his achievements “I would just remind you that we won a championship without losing a game,” he said “Nobody else has done that.”

Wenger is capable of building scrappy teams as well as beautiful ones, and has done so in the past. Eight wins in a row (and 16 from the last 18 games) is not an achievement to be overlooked by anyone; even the man who believes in the Arsenal players more than anyone is somewhat taken aback.

“I always hope the best of my team but, if he is serious, no manager in the world can predict a run like that.”

Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal will now aim for a win against Reading in the FA Cup before chasing a ninth Premier League victory against Chelsea.

After the game Olivier Giroud said the team wants to “keep this run going until the end” and, though they have huge hurdles ahead, I wouldn’t bet against any side with this much confidence.

As many consecutive wins as that famous team of 2003/04 ever managed is incredible. In 2002 Arsène Wenger’s double winners set the Premier League record of 14 back-to-back victories. That is still a little way off.

Ending the season unbeaten, let alone winning each game, would be huge for Arsenal. Taking this momentum into next season would be a big boost as Arsène Wenger aims to build his next successful Arsenal team.
