As Arsenal announced the arrival of Gabriel on a permanent deal, they also slipped in some Joel Campbell news.

Leaving to join Villarreal on loan for the rest of the season, the Costa Rican, who found his chances at Arsenal limited, was handed a new deal before he was sent packing making him the second renewal today after Mikel Arteta’s agent revealed that the Spaniard had signed a one-year extension with the club.

With his contract due to expire in 2016 it would certainly seem that this is more a case of Arsenal protecting their investment than any long-term plans they might have for the forward.

With Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez all at the club and Wenger seeming to favour Yaya Sanogo over Campbell, it’s doubtful that he is likely to make the breakthrough to first-team regular with the club.

You can’t even say that he was a bit-part player this season with the club and while he was clearly making strides, there is something about him that Wenger just doesn’t seem to fancy right now.

Will that change in the future? It’s hard to tell.

But for now, at least, we know he won’t be going anywhere on a free.

Joel Campbell has already been speaking about his happiness at the move, you can watch that video here.

It’s also nice to see that the reports we brought you back at the start of the month regarding a new deal for Campbell weren’t a load of rubbish.

Always nice when that happens.
