Arsenal are closing on two players from the Barcelona academy, according to reports in Spain.
Spanish journalist Gerard Romero reports that Arsenal are close to an agreement for Joel Lopez. He also reveals that Robert Navarro has very good offers from Arsenal and Monaco, and seems to be on the verge of leaving the club. In Navarro’s case, he’s still considering his options at this stage.
We reported on Arsenal’s interest in Lopez back in March, so this isn’t completely out of the blue. At the time he was just 15 years old and under contract, but since then he’s turned 16 and his deal with Barcelona is coming to an end.
Lopez is a pacey left-back who loves to get forward, suggesting he could be the next Bellerin on the opposite side of the field.
Arsenal and Liverpool have both reportedly shown an interest in the youngster, but it looks like the Gunners are going to win the race right now.
Similar to Lopez, this isn’t the first we’ve heard of Arsenal’s interest in Navarro. Reports last month suggested he could sign for the Gunners as soon as he turned 16, but that hasn’t happened just yet.
However, it seems the claims that he was stalling on a contract extension are correct, as he still hasn’t signed a new deal.
The 16-year-old attacking midfielder made his debut for the u16 national team in February, appearing three times for his country.
Perhaps he could help the Arsenal u18s try to push one step further to win the FA Youth Cup and u18 Premier League next season, after they finished as runners-up in both competitions this year. We’ll have to wait and see.
