Arsenal remained top of the WSL with a 4-0 thumping of Tottenham on Saturday at the Emirates in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 53,000 fans.

Tottenham were lucky it was only four as Mead opened the scoring, Vivianne Miedema scored a brace and centreback, Rafaelle, scored a powerful header.

Arsenal finished with 16 shots to Tottenham’s three, 14 corners to their one and 535 passes to Spurs’ 257 (only 194 of which were accurate).

Speaking after the game, Mead told BBC Sport, “[It’s] Ridiculous, I’ve never experienced that before and, like I say, the fans have been incredible.

“The fans being here and having so much of an energy, it was incredible what we did over the summer, but now we want to continue this.

“Hopefully, again this is still the beginning and we’re putting the performances in.

“I still feel like I’m on cloud nine, that’s just me and I don’t think it’ll sink in for a long, long time.”

Miedema also spoke to the BBC, telling the reporter, “You feel like something special is happening. It is just really nice to be a part of it.” Speaking before the match, Miedema had also said it was games like the north London derby that had convinced her to stay with Arsenal this summer.

Interviewed pitchside at halftime, Vinai Venkatesham, Arsenal’s chief executive,  said he was “hugely proud” of a day that marks “another big milestone for women’s football”.
