Connor Humm reported that Emile Smith Rowe missed training with Arsenal on Wednesday morning, as the rest of the squad had a session in preparation for the start of the Europa League group stage on Thursday.

Speaking to the press ahead of Arsenal’s first Europa League game of the season, Arteta confirmed that there is a problem.

“He felt discomfort in an area that [he’s been dealing with] now for a few weeks,” Arteta said. He wasn’t comfortable after the game and he hasn’t trained in the last few days, so he’s out of the squad.”

David Ornstein had reported on Sunday that Smith Rowe appeared to pull up with an injury during Arsenal’s post-match warm-down at Old Trafford.

The midfielder reportedly looked distressed and was accompanied back to the dressing room early by Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta.

Given Smith Rowe’s history of injury problems and the fact he’s now not in training, it seems very likely the 22-year-old has suffered another setback.

After missing the opening day of the Premier League campaign through injury, Smith Rowe has been in every Arsenal squad since, but he’s only played 47 minutes of senior football.

The club were clearly managing him carefully on his comeback, playing him for no more than 16 minutes in any individual appearance. Yet those efforts appear to have been in vain.

You’d imagine Smith Rowe would have been in line to start against FC Zurich on Thursday, but someone else will have to come in now as Smith Rowe has not travelled.
