Cesc Fabregas left Monaco and was a free agent after what the Arsenal legend called the ‘worst year of my life’ but now has a new home in Italy.

Injuries plagued Fabregas’s third year in France as his 35-year-old body started to feel the battering it has taken since he burst onto the scene in London as a teenager.

Unwilling to hang up his boots on the back of such a poor season, Fabregas was clear that he would be looking for a new club and now he has now found one in Como 1907.

The Italians, under their chairman, the former Chelsea midfielder, Dennis Wise, were certainly keen to land a former Arsenal midfielder. Last season, they had an agreement to sign Jack Wilshere, but, due to Brexit, Arsenal’s new u18 head coach, could not get a visa.

As a Spaniard, that was not a problem for Fabregas.

Como 1907 play in Serie B where they finished 13th last season. They have made it to Serie A a few times, the first time in 1949, 42 years after they were founded.

After four years in the top flight, they then spent the next 20 bouncing between Serie B and Serie C before returning to Serie A in the 70s for two years.

Their longest stint in Serie A was a five-year spell from 1984, finishing ninth in 1985/1986 and 1986/1987.

Relegation, however, came in 1989 and they have not made it back since.

In the 16/17 season Como were declared ‘out of business’ (for the second time) due to financial issues and put up for auction but in 2019 they were purchased by the Indonesian tobacco company, Djarum Group.

Valued at around £2.25m, Fabregas is now the second most valuable player at Como.

Currently, their most valuable player is centre forward Leonardo Mancuso, a 30-year-old journeyman who enjoyed spells with AC Milan’s youth teams and Juventus, although he never played for the senior team of either.

With FC Empoli, where he made his biggest impact, he scored 38 goals, with 10 assists, in 89 games.

He is valued at around £2.43m.
