Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is just two goals short of equalling the Spanish record for goals scored by a player arriving in January.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took a massive paycut to sign for Barcelona but will see his wages rise by over four times next season.

He might argue that, despite his age, he is worth it.

Barcelona have just two games remaining and the former Arsenal forward, whom the club let leave for free, needs only two goals to equal a record set by Nikola Zigic in 2009 for the most goals scored in the league by a player arriving in January.

Currently, Aubameyang’s 11 La Liga goals in 15 games makes him the third highest goalscorer to move to the league in a January window, behind Zigic in first place with 13, Adrian Ilie (12). His brace against Celta Vigo saw him overtake overtaking Diego Costa (10).

“He is humble, hard-working and positive. A super signing,” Xavi said at the end of April, having previously called Aubameyang a ‘gift fallen from the sky’.

Aubameyang has a contract with Barcelona until 2025, when he would be 36, but it also has a bi-lateral exit clause that would allow them both to part ways at the end of the 22/23 season.

There is also talk that Barcelona will try and sell him this summer before his pay-rise kicks in.
