Arsenal have confirmed that Alexandre Lacazette will be out for between four and six weeks after he underwent an arthroscopy on his left knee.

As well as coming as a blow for the player, it means that Arsenal will have to turn to Danny Welbeck for the game against Ostersund on Thursday as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is cup-tied.

The NHS details an arthroscopy as:

An arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery used to diagnose and treat problems with joints.

It’s most commonly used on the knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips.

The equipment used during an arthroscopy is very small, so only small cuts in the skin are needed. This means it has some advantages over traditional, “open” surgery, including:

  • less pain after the operation
  • faster healing time
  • lower risk of infection
  • you can often go home the same day
  • you may be able to return to normal activities more quickly

Although the Frenchman came underfire for his misses against Spurs on Saturday, it was hoped that a start and a few goals against the Swedes would help him rebuild his shattered confidence.

Alas, we now have to turn to Danny Welbeck and hope that he mis-kicks a few in instead.

Arsene Wenger could also turn to one of the youngsters but that seems unlikely given how huge this game is. Arsenal need to win the tie in the first leg given they play Manchester City in the final just a few days after the return fixture and Wenger will want to rest as many players ahead of that game.

Arsenal’s brief statement said, “Striker Alex Lacazette had an arthroscopy on his left knee in London on Tuesday morning.

“The minor procedure was a success and he will now undergo a period of rehabilitation.

“It is envisaged that he will return to the squad within four to six weeks.”
