Unai Emery’s Arsenal has exactly the same number of Premier League points from his first 43 matches as Arsene Wenger won in his final 43.

The Premier League posted a stat on Sunday morning detailing that Emery has won 78 points in his first 43 Premier League games as Arsenal’s head coach, the same number Wenger won in the same period at the end of his tenure.

For many Arsenal fans, that will just go to emphasise how little things have changed from the former manager’s time in charge.

The Gunners did make it one step further in the Europa League last season, but they also did worse in the domestic cups. Both bosses were comprehensively beaten by an English top-six side in the only final they made it to.

It’s important for Emery to start showing some improvement on his predecessor’s final days at the Emirates, or you wouldn’t imagine Raul Sanllehi, Edu and the rest of the Arsenal hierarchy will have too much hesitation in moving on to the next head coach.

The main benefit of the new behind-the-scenes setup at Arsenal is that it allows for a smoother transition between head coaches.

Emery’s initial contract also expires at the end of the season, so if nothing has changed by the end of the year it won’t even cost the club anything to move on. It’s up to him to make sure that’s not necessary.
