Former Arsenal academy striker Donyell Malen scored five goals in a single match against Vitesse on Saturday, as his impressive start to 2019/20 continues.

The season is still very young, but Malen already has nine goals and four assists in 11 club appearances, as well as a goal on his debut for the Netherlands against Germany over the international break.

Five of the 20-year-old’s six league goals came in one 5-0 win this weekend, the highlights of which you can watch below:

Malen left Arsenal in 2017, deciding that the best thing for his development was to return to his home country. Then just 18 years old, the striker had been called up by Arsene Wenger for the first-team tour, and he’d also been offered a contract extension.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, Malen chose the guaranteed game time he’d get in the Eredivisie over the possibility of further chances in North London.

The decision was clearly the right one for the striker, based on how things have been going since then. It’s hard to argue Arsenal could have offered anything close to the level of faith and senior match experience that PSV have given him.

There’s no telling what the future holds for Malen, and maybe he’ll make a return to the Premier League someday. For now, he should just be proud of what he’s achieving in the Netherlands.
