The 19-year-old, who was nominated for the Bundelisga Rookie of the Season award in Germany, scored seven Bundesliga goals in 628 minutes during the 2018/19 campaign, a goal every 89.7 minutes on average.

A couple of injuries and a suspension hurt the winger’s momentum somewhat, but he was still taking part in pretty much every game when fit, only remaining on the bench five times all season.

For a teenager with very little senior experience, finishing the campaign as Hoffenheim’s fourth top scorer was an impressive effort, especially for his ‘rookie’ campaign in Germany.

“Arsenal is my main goal,” he told Sky Sports.

“After the Euros I’ll look to go back to pre-season, do that very strong and hopefully play for the team I love.

“I haven’t spoken to him [Unai Emery] yet.

“The recruitment team said I need to concentrate on the Euros and then we’ll get back into Arsenal later on.”

About his time in Germany, he added, “It’s a different style the way the German players play.

“I think the English players like to play a lot of one and two touch and we can find each other in the pockets.

“In Germany it’s more physical. It’s a lot of aggressive runs in behind and getting into the box.

“I was happy I got that experience out there and I’m happy to be back.

“I learnt a lot on the pitch and I’ve had to deal with a lot off the pitch as well – the culture, the German [language] barrier, but I thought all in it has been a good experience and I’m ready to come back.”

With Arsenal’s restricted budget this summer Emery would be mad to ignore Nelson’s talent.

The u21 Euros, however, run from 16-30 June after which Nelson will no doubt go on holiday. What that means is his pre-season with the club will be impacted given the season starts on 9 August and he will probably get around six weeks off.

Nelson joins Matteo Guendouzi (France) and Krystian Bielik (Poland) in receiving call-ups for the competition.
