We were expecting van Veenendaal to leave so that’s not a massive surprise. She lost her starting spot with the Dutch national team and was expected to move on in order to attempt to reclaim that.

Bloodworth, however, has left to join VfL Wolfsburg in Germany. The 24-year-old has signed a contract until 2022 with the five-time Champions.

“I am proud and pleased to have signed a contract with VfL Wolfsburg – a club that is one of the absolute top addresses in women’s football,” said Bloodworth.

“Now I am looking forward to the World Cup in France, but I can not wait to start this new chapter of my career.”

Ralf Kellermann, Sporting Director of VfL-Frauen,said, “Dominique in England has matured into one of the best defensive players in the league. We are very happy that we will complete our squad with an internationally experienced defensive specialist who fits in optimally with our concept, both sporty and human! “
