Chelsea centre-back David Luiz believes he’s going to remain with the club next season, confirming that ‘in five days’ everyone will know his future.
Luiz is set to be out of contract this summer, and he’s been heavily linked with Arsenal over the last year. In 2018, Arsenal reportedly had a bid for the defender rejected, and the media have been pushing the story of a free transfer move this summer when his deal runs out.
Instead, it seems the Brazilian is set for another season at Stamford Bridge. Speaking to the press after Chelsea’s Europa League semi-final victory, Luiz answered the question of whether he’d still be with the club in 2019/20.
“Yes, I think so,” Luiz responded (via Sky Sports). “Soon, everybody is going to know. It will be before the Europa League final, in five days. I love this club. My great moments in football were here, especially the European titles – the Champions League and Europa League.
“My relation with the fans has always been great since the first day I played here. I just try to do my best and make them happy. Nobody wants to play in an empty stadium when you have an opportunity to understand that we play for them.”
Thanks to that semi-final victory on Thursday, Luiz now has to face up against Arsenal in the Europa League final before the season is over. The two London teams will meet in Baku, Azerbaijan to fight for the trophy, with a place in the Champions League on the line for the Gunners.
From an Arsenal fan point of view, let’s hope Chelsea lose the match, receive their transfer ban, sell Eden Hazard and Luiz is left regretting his decision. Nothing personal.
