Arsenal will only dip into the summer transfer market for a new centre-back if they can find buyers for their existing defensive options, according to reports.

James Benge of Football.London reports that Unai Emery wants to sign an experienced wide option, a central midfielder and a left-back this summer, but adding a new centre-back is only a priority if they can sell first.

Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers are the two players Arsenal are reportedly looking to offload, which makes sense. Mustafi hasn’t had a positive campaign with the club, and he’s now two years away from the end of his contract, making this the right time to sell.

Meanwhile, Chambers’ stock has probably risen during his year away with Fulham. He has three years left on his Arsenal deal, but if Emery doesn’t think he’s earned a chance in his squad, the player should draw a fair bit of interest from around England, at least.

Arsenal would probably be happy to take a loss on Mustafi just to bring in some money and replace him, whilst they can reasonably expect a bit of a profit on the £18m they bought Chambers for. After that, they can look to make a new signing at the back.
