Arsenal have committed 11 errors leading to an opposition goal this Premier League season, the joint-most of any team in the competition.

According to the Premier League, Arsenal, AFC Bournemouth and Fulham have all made 11 errors leading to a goal this season, putting the trio three out in front of Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town on eight each.

It’s not exactly great company for Arsenal to be keeping, given Huddersfield, Cardiff and Fulham are all fighting relegation. It’s really costing the Gunners in their top four race as well, with Shkodran Mustafi’s mistake on Sunday condemning Arsenal to a home defeat to Crystal Palace.

On the one hand, the metric does seem pretty poorly defined. Individual examples vary greatly and sometimes don’t seem like errors at all.

Bernd Leno was given an error leading to a goal for palming the ball out in the 1-1 against Liverpool, even though it was actually an accidental deflection off Rob Holding’s leg that took that clearance away from Sead Kolasinac and to James Milner.

Granit Xhaka got one for his poor header against West Ham, which was certainly a bad header, but is every attempted clearance that doesn’t come off counted an error? If so, you’d imagine there would be loads of them every week.

On the other hand, overall it’s clear Emery needs to do something about this before next season. Whether that’s getting rid of error-prone players, changing something tactically or working on decision-making, something has to change.
