Mesut Özil went on a weekend trip to Turkey over the last couple of days, and the media took the opportunity to try and force a story out of it.

On Sunday, Özil posted a picture on his Instagram from a trip to Turkey. Within hours, the Mirror had a story up headlined “Mesut Ozil leaves UK to clear his head amid Unai Emery problems at Arsenal”, and they weren’t the only ones to try and make a big deal out of the holiday.

The S*n went with a similar headline: “Mesut Ozil leaves UK amid standoff with Arsenal boss Unai Emery to take stunning fiancé Amine Gulse to Turkey”.

The Daily Mail also tried to tie the trip to the player’s dispute with Emery, posting an article titled: “Out-of-favour Arsenal star Mesut Ozil takes break to visit set of Turkish television show as he continues to be left out of Unai Emery’s plans”

What all three articles failed to mention is that a number of other Arsenal stars went on mini-holidays over the weekend break. Alex Iwobi visited the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang met up with family in Italy and Mohamed Elneny went on a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Those are just the players we know about from social media. There’s no reason to believe they were the only ones to take a trip away, given the team didn’t have a match or any training sessions over the weekend.

Of course, when Iwobi goes to Paris it’s just a holiday, whereas when Özil goes to Turkey he’s trying to escape his problems with Emery. Is anyone else tired of this nonsense yet?
