Gelson Martins is choosing between a move to Newcastle, Arsenal or AS Monaco, according to Di Marzio journalist Matteo Moretto.

On Friday, Matteo Moretto of Di Marzio tweeted that Gelson Martins was closing in on a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal and Newcastle ‘close’. Then, on Sunday, he provided an update that the player was deciding between the two English clubs and Monaco.

Moretto insists that the winger ‘has to choose shortly’, which implies a move is on the cards for January, rather than the summer.

Martins was heavily linked with a free transfer to Arsenal last year, after cancelling his contract with Sporting Lisbon. However, the 23-year-old ended up joining Atletico Madrid instead.

Since then, the winger hasn’t been given too many opportunities, making just four starts in all competitions. Two of those came against fourth-tier side Sant Andreu. Clearly, things aren’t working out too well so far, so perhaps another move would be his best option. Atletico Madrid would make a quick profit on their free transfer too.

Moretto doesn’t make it clear whether it’s a loan or a permanent deal being considered, but a loan could also be beneficial for all parties. Arsenal need wide options now, but would probably prefer to find a long-term solution to the problem in the summer. Martins could fill the gap in the meantime. We’ll see.
