Granit Xhaka, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all captained their countries on Saturday, to varying degrees of success on the pitch.

Granit Xhaka had the toughest job on his hands, facing up against a very strong Belgium side. Romelu Lukaku gave the Belgian’s the lead before Switzerland fought back for 1-1, but they ended up conceding against late on to lose 2-1. Xhaka posted a picture with Belgium captain and Chelsea star Eden Hazard after the match:

Sokratis Papastathopoulos managed to get a win with Greece, fighting hard for a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Hungary. One of the highlights was his expressive celebration with Kostas Manolas after a crucial injury-time tackle.

Finally, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabon eased to victory over South Sudan 3-0. The Arsenal striker played the full 90 minutes but wasn’t involved in the goals, for once.

It was a crucial victory for Gabon, as it was their first in African Cup of Nations Qualifying. Only the top two teams in each group make it into the tournament and Aubameyang’s side still sit third as it stands. They’ll need another win against South Sudan on Tuesday to break into that top two.

Let’s hope all three can find success in their second international matches of the break.
