Unai Emery is looking at Miguel Almiron and Hector Herrera as possible replacements for Aaron Ramsey in January, according to reports.

The Evening Standard write that Emery would consider selling the Welshman in January, as he’s keen to raise funds to continue rebuilding the squad. Obviously, if Ramsey leaves on a free transfer at the end of the season, Arsenal lose out on both the player and the transfer fee.

As a result, the Arsenal head coach is starting to look at alternatives on the market at the moment. The Standard claim that list of options includes Miguel Almiron and Hector Herrera.

There’s been plenty of buzz surrounding Almiron-to-Arsenal in the last few weeks. Fox Sports announced that Arsenal agreed on a £11.5m deal to sign the goalscoring attacking midfielder. That was followed up by the media reporting a clarification from his agent that hinted at contact but said nothing was formal.

Then the club president reportedly commented on it, before denying the quotes were genuine. Whatever the truth of the matter, it seems there is at least some interest in the player.

What’s interesting is that Almiron and Herrera are so different from each other. Almiron is very much an attacking midfielder, getting on the end of chances and creating them for his teammates.

Meanwhile, Herrera is more of a defensive midfielder, whose strengths lie in areas like tackling and aerial duels. He’s currently the captain of FC Porto, whilst Almiron plays for MLS side Atlanta United FC.

Both are in good form at the moment, so it’s really just a decision based on which type of player Emery thinks the squad needs.

Personally, I’d argue Arsenal are lacking options at 10. Mesut Özil is one, but that’s about it. The reason Aaron Ramsey and Alex Iwobi are having to fill in is that there are so few alternatives. Even 18-year-old Emile Smith Rowe has had a chance to play the role.

We’ll see what Emery’s priorities are in January though.
