Unai Emery is expected to develop his current crop of players and promote from the academy rather than spending big in the upcoming transfer windows, according to reports.

The Daily Mail wrote on Tuesday that finances are still tight at Arsenal for the time being. As a result, Emery will mostly be expected to improve the players already at the club rather than spending big.

To try and achieve that goal, the head coach is reportedly holding regular meetings with academy coaches to stay informed on the development of any potential stars coming through.

We’ve already seen evidence of Emery’s willingness to take the coaches’ feedback on board, with Emile Smith Rowe. When the Spaniard took the 18-year-old on Arsenal’s pre-season tour, he admitted that was on the advice of the club.

Emery gave the young midfielder a chance, and now Smith Rowe looks like he could be a regular starter in the League Cup and Europa League group stages.

The positives of this approach are that Arsenal have a lot of talent in the academy at the moment. Smith Rowe was just one of the exciting talents in the u18s’ run to the Youth Cup final, then there are those like Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock who led the u23s to the Premier League 2 title.

The downside is Arsenal may have to be a bit more patient with those coming through than they would be with ready-made signings. Hopefully, the youngsters can prove they deserve the opportunity.
