Mesut Ozil earned a spot in Garth Crooks BBC Team of the Week after his goal against Watford at the weekend but Crooks still managed to make himself sound like an ill-informed arse.

“Did I see Mesut Ozil wearing the captain’s armband?” asked Crooks who clearly hasn’t been paying the slightest bit of attention to Arsenal.

Yes, you did Garth, and not for the first time. In fact, Unai Emery has even spoke about Ozil being one of his five captains. “Now there is innovation,” he continued. “Well done Unai Emery. If you want more out of your player then give him more responsibility.

How patronising is that?

To get a true flavour of how Crooks really feels about Arsenal, you have to read his comments on Raheem Sterling, whom he also selected.

“I told my son two seasons ago that I thought Raheem Sterling had the ability to compete with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo for the mantle of best player in the world,” Crooks writes with no hint that he’s only joking. “My son roared with laughter, but he’s an Arsenal fan so what does he know!”

He also praised Harry Kane as the best penalty taker in the division. He should be given the rate Spurs’ players dive to win them for him.

Crooks also compared Marko Arnautovic to Eric Cantona, declared himself an expert on keepers because he played with “three of the greatest goalkeepers who ever lived – Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence,” picked Danny Rose for the second week running on the back of the penalty he dived to win (see picture above), and highlighted that Unai Emery ‘knows what he’s doing’.

Crooks, as you might remember, played for Stoke City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

That tells you all you really need to know, really.
