Alex Iwobi is feeling the love from the Nigeria fans over the international break, particularly after his impressive recent form for Arsenal.

A large crowd gathered to watch Nigeria in training, ahead of their match against Libya at the weekend. Iwobi was a particular fan favourite, with supporters mobbing him for selfies and chanting ‘Arsenal! Arsenal!’, according to ScoreNigeria.

Iwobi’s father Chuka told the media that the love his son receives is a mutual feeling.

“Alex is loved by the nation and he also loves Nigeria,” Iwobi Sr. said. “The love of the fans is remarkable. He playing for Nigeria is a privilege and a joy for his family.”

Ever since Iwobi decided to pick Nigeria over England, he’s had that choice paid back to him in spades. Regular international football, scoring the goal that sent his country to the World Cup, and the near unconditional love of the supporters, it’s all going well for the 22-year-old.

Iwobi has always performed well for Nigeria, but he’s really starting to nail down his spot in the Arsenal squad too.

This season already, Iwobi has a goal and four assists, but that doesn’t even tell the whole story. He was instrumental in recent matches against Fulham, Brentford and Watford even though most of his goal contributions came indirectly, through playing Monreal in behind, forcing own goals, or similar.

Long may the academy graduate’s progress continue.
