Thierry Henry is favourite to take over the manager job at Aston Villa, according to the bookies.

Almost every single major bookmaker offering odds on the job has Henry as odds-on to take over from Steve Bruce in charge of Villa. Bruce was sacked by the club earlier this week after just one win in 10 games.

There were chants of “we want Brucie out” from the fans in their last match against Preston, a 3-3 draw. One supporter even threw a cabbage in the manager’s direction in a bizarre show of anger at how things were going.

Kevin MacDonald, Villa’s u23 manager, has taken over the first-team for the time being. The club said in a statement on their website that “the process of recruiting a new manager has begun”, so this clearly isn’t a permanent job for MacDonald.

It doesn’t sound like the easiest job in the world for Henry to take on, but perhaps he’ll be inspired by Frank Lampard’s spell with Derby so far.

Another former Premier League hero in his playing days, Lampard is making a name for himself in management at the fellow Championship club. If the Englishman continues on that path, offers from the top division are sure to follow. It’s up to Henry whether he believes he can achieve the same sort of thing.
