Ian Wright has hit out at AFTV Media over comments on their channel that accused Arsenal of scraping the barrel for players in their legends match on Saturday.

Arsenal faced Real Madrid in the charity match this weekend, with players like Robert Pires, Jens Lehmann, Tomas Rosicky, Nigel Winterburn, Gilberto Silva, Ray Parlour and Anders Limpar taking part, among others. David Seaman was also supposed to get a game, but had to pull out with injury, just like Sol Campbell in the reverse fixture.

One supporter speaking on Arsenal Fan TV, now known as “AFTV Media”, didn’t feel that was enough to justify the ‘legends’ tagline though. He accused the club of “[scraping] the bottom of the barrel for players”.

Needless to say, Ian Wright wasn’t happy about the comments, and with host Robbie for letting the fan get away with them.

Obviously, if you attend these games hoping to see Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry playing like they never left their prime, you’re going to end up disappointed. The reality is many former players have other commitments, and of course those that do turn up aren’t going to be quite at their best.

That doesn’t change the fact that there were some nailed-on legends on show though. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to take a look back at Lehmann, Pires and Gilberto in the ‘invincibles’ era, Limpar in the 1990/91 title-winning season, Winterburn’s many trophies over a 13-year spell at the club, the list goes on.

Then there were players like Raul playing for Real Madrid on the other side, and the fact it’s all for a good cause. It’s bizarre that anyone could come away from an event like that wanting to rant about the players they didn’t get to see.
