Unai Emery was impressed with Emile Smith Rowe after handing the youngster his first start of his fledgling Arsenal career, but he wants him to learn to calm down moving forward.

Smith Rowe found himself in a couple of great positions, especially in the second half against Brentford, but he seemed to panic and, as a result, failed to find his target by some distance.

“He’s improving,” Emery said after the match about the 18-year-old. “He’s grown up here in the academy with us, in the pre-season and also today, he worked very well.

“He needs to continue taking responsibility, taking confidence and also with the ball, continuing improving on being more calm because he arrived – in the second half – in the box two times with a very good position and we need to also improve in this situation for giving us big chances to score.

“But I think it’s one process and they worked and they did a good game today.”

Smith Rowe has played a total of 84 minutes for the Arsenal first team so far this season with 64 of those coming on Wednesday night against Brentford.

Although he was taken off just after the hour mark, he enjoyed a decent game even if he did rush himself when he got into advanced positions.

He’ll learn to control his nerves, after all, he is only 18. What were you doing at that age? I know what I was up to and it certainly didn’t involve performing in front of tens of thousands of people live and millions around the world.
