Unai Emery denies that he blocked Joachim Low from meeting with Mesut Ozil at London Colney this week.

The German national team manager turned up at Colney and it wasn’t long until we had reports that the club had stopped him from meeting the German playmaker.

The story stank of bulls*t from the first minute it appeared. Who in their right mind would believe the club would stop Low speaking to Ozil?

“It’s not true, it’s not true,” Emery said after Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Brentford. This is also not the first time he’s had to deny something involving Ozil. He also had to deny reports of a training ground bust-up between the pair.

ESPN report that a club source told them, “Low was at the training ground in London Colney to have lunch with Per Mertesacker, who is now the academy director at Arsenal. He also met with fellow Germans Shkodran Mustafi and Bernd Leno while he was there, but Ozil was not at the training ground at the time”.

Ozil was not part of the Carabao Cup matchday squad and was most likely given the day off along with a number of other stars who didn’t feature on Wednesday night.

Speaking shortly after Ozil announced his retirement from international football under the current German FA regime, Low expressed his disappointment that the player didn’t bother to contact him before making his announcement, although he seemed not to care that the player felt discriminated against because of his race.

“There was never any form of racism in the Germany team,” Low said. “His agent called me and informed about his retirement.

“Mesut did not call me, not to this very day. I tried to reach him several times in the past two weeks, via text message, via phone. Mesut has decided to take this path. I must accept it.

“Ozil has been my player for nine years. We’ve experienced a lot together. A few lows, but more highs. We’ve won the World Cup. This will still stay forever.

“I am still of the opinion that he was one of the best players we had in Germany in the last 20, 30 years. One day, we’ll have a conversation. I would have wished for him to inform me personally, and I was disappointed at first.

“The issue cost us a lot of power, and nerves because it was always there. But it was not decisive in our World Cup exit.”
