Arsenal have withdrawn their contract offer to Aaron Ramsey for three different reasons, according to a report in the Telegraph.

Jeremy Wilson wrote on Thursday that there are three different factors going into the decision.

Firstly, Unai Emery’s personal assessment of Ramsey, and the midfielder’s performances so far. Secondly, Emery’s assessment of the priorities for the squad, and where they should be investing. Thirdly, the reality of Arsenal’s spending situation hitting home.

On the first point, Ramsey has had a very mixed season so far. He certainly presses well in his new advanced central role, but he’s finding it difficult to have any impact in front of goal. His two assists against Everton were his first goal contributions of the season, and even then he was a bit fortunate to get them.

The midfielder certainly hasn’t looked like someone Arsenal should make one of the highest paid players at the club.

Then when it comes to Emery’s assessment of the squad, it would be hard to see how he could conclude that central midfield is a priority in the upcoming windows.

The defence are having problems, Arsenal still don’t have many natural wide players, but the middle of the park has done well enough. Especially since Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira have paired up.

Finally, the spending situation is something we all just have to accept. Until Arsenal make it back into the Champions League, the wage bill is going to be restricted.

Signing seven players this calendar year and awarding new contracts to the likes of Mesut Özil, Reiss Nelson, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Emile Smith Rowe, Granit Xhaka, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Eddie Nketiah, among others, doesn’t leave much space. If Ramsey signs on too that will really restrict Arsenal in January.

Unfortunately, it’s not looking good for the Welshman’s time in North London, unless something changes soon.
