Gareth Southgate is considering giving Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck a rare start for England against Switzerland on Tuesday, as the striker looks to fill Jamie Vardy’s spot in the team.

Vardy retired from international duty after the World Cup, a decision that surprised Southgate and the England squad. As a result, there’s a gap in the team for a striker when Harry Kane isn’t starting.

In fact, if England continue to play two up front, there may be a spot in the team even when Kane does play.

According to the Daily Star, Southgate is thinking about handing Welbeck a start on Tuesday against Switzerland. It would be the Arsenal man’s first for his country since a game against Germany in March 2016.

It’s fair to say the 27-year-old has earned a chance. In just 100 minutes of substitute appearances since his last start, he has a goal and an assist. Arguably he should’ve had another goal against Spain over the weekend, but the referee harshly ruled it out.

You never hear Welbeck complain about his lack of game time, even when he got just 11 minutes on the pitch during England’s World Cup run to the semi-finals. He’s happy to simply make the most of his opportunities when they do come. That’s why the striker has a goal or assist every 113 minutes across his entire national career.

If Welbeck does start on Tuesday, we wish him good luck for the game!
