Arsenal are planning a January move for Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis, according to reports, with the Brazilian out of contract at the end of the season.

A report in Kickoff suggests that Unai Emery isn’t convinced by his current options at left-back, and wants to bring in Luis in January. Atletico wanted £27m for him over the summer, but no one came anywhere near that valuation.

With the 33-year-old out of contract at the end of the season, the La Liga side may be willing to accept a cut-price deal in the winter window.

Luis himself certainly made it sound like he wanted a transfer in a recent interview with beIN SPORTS, but confirmed that Atletico’s position was that they didn’t want to sell. At the time he accepted that and moved on, but it’s clear his bargaining position only grows stronger by the day.

“Three weeks ago I held a meeting with the club to tell them where I stood,” he explained. “But the club told me that they did not want me to leave and would not negotiate a transfer. From then on in I did not push for an exit.”

Arsenal should have a number of left-back options at the moment. Nacho Monreal has been the club’s first choice for a while, Sead Kolasinac joined last summer, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles played the position a lot in 2017/18. Unfortunately the latter two fell injured at the same time, so it’s all on Monreal right now.

Emery had a good look at Kolasinac in pre-season, and at Monreal through the first few games of the campaign. If he’s not impressed by the pair, it’s possible he might opt for an experienced alternative, like he did with Stephan Lichtsteiner at right-back. We’ll see.
