Jens Lehmann thinks David Ospina was a bit unlucky with Arsenal, but admits the goalkeeper’s height was probably an issue for him in the Premier League.

Speaking to El Espectador in Colombia, Lehmann discussed Ospina’s time with Arsenal so far, and why he didn’t get more game time under Arsene Wenger.

“It is not that he hasn’t succeeded,” Lehmann began. “He just had bad luck, to have a great goalkeeper like Petr Cech at his side.

“Maybe (Ospina’s height took its toll). That is a very important aspect in the Premier League, because it is very physical football. At any moment someone falls on you. I am tall, and I know that is important.

“Ospina had his big chance to shine in the semi-finals of the Europa League, but we lost. He seems to me a brave player, who knows how to play with his feet. He has made a good decision by going to a club like Napoli.”

Ospina hasn’t officially parted ways with Arsenal just yet. He’s currently on a season-long loan with Napoli, but his contract in North London lasts until 2020. He’d have a year left on it next summer if he returns to the Emirates Stadium.

He may not end up coming back at all though. Napoli have an option to buy in the Colombian’s contract, if they choose to activate it.

Ospina has been in and out of the team so far in Italy. He sat on the bench for the first game of the season, then played the next two, before sitting out against Fiorentina, but returning for the Champions League game against Red Star Belgrade.

It’s possible Carlo Ancelotti isn’t sure which of his goalkeepers to make first choice, or perhaps he just prefers to rotate depending on the opponent. Either way, it’s good that the 30-year-old managed to get his first clean sheet on Tuesday, even if Napoli only managed to get a draw. Hopefully he finds some form now.
