Unai Emery says that Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey are speaking with the club over contract extensions, despite reports that Ramsey’s talks have broken down completely.

Reports from the Mirror and the Daily Mail since Wednesday night suggest that Ramsey is set to leave Arsenal, after his contract extension talks fell apart. The Mirror claimed there’s no offer on the table for the midfielder, despite the club reportedly turning down a £50m bid for him over the summer.

This directly contradicts what Emery said in his post-match press conference though, where he insisted that both Ramsey and Welbeck are still in talks with the club.

“I know they have the last year of their contract with the team and they are working on speaking with the club,” he responded to a question about both Ramsey and Welbeck.

“But for me, the focus is only on the performance in each match and every training session. The performance and the commitment of the players is very high and Aaron, also Danny Welbeck’s situation, is one thing for the club and for them.”

Clearly Emery isn’t taking a major role in negotiations, but it would be surprising if John Cross knew that Ramsey was no longer speaking with the club before the head coach did.

Cross hasn’t had a great record for exclusives like this recently, with his article about Mesut Özil telling teammates he’s going to leave for Manchester United last year or Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere preparing to sign Arsenal contracts.

All this to say, maybe it’s best if we wait a bit longer before assuming Ramsey is gone for good.
