Ever Banega’s father has confirmed the summer transfer rumour linking his son to Arsenal, but says the midfielder feels Sevilla is his home now.

The media consistently linked Arsenal to a move for Banega over the summer. Unai Emery seemingly led the charge to bring in his former player, and reportedly even contacted him personally to try and win him over.

Banega has a €20m release clause, which isn’t particularly substantial for a club like Arsenal. If the Argentine midfielder had been keen to join his former coach Unai Emery in the Premier League, it would’ve been difficult for Sevilla to stop him. However, it appears he didn’t want the move, according to his father.

“Last summer, during the World Cup, Arsenal got in touch, and he did not want to go” Daniel Banega said. “He is very happy there, he is calm, together with his family. It is difficult to adapt to other leagues. Ever is comfortable in Seville and choose to stay, Sevilla is his home.”

Banega Sr. also confirmed that Emery is a big fan of his son both as a player and a person. He therefore refused to rule out a move in the future if Banega’s contract situation continues to drag on. The 30-year-old has less than two years left on his current deal.

This news is particularly interesting given recent developments with Aaron Ramsey. If Arsenal had managed to land Banega in the summer, perhaps the Welshman would’ve already moved on. We’ll see what happens in the coming transfer windows.
